How I Became Interested in UF Organic ChemistryPeople are constantly asking me how I became interested in UF Organic Chemistry. They say that I was at a party with an acquaintance who became so engrossed in the subject matter that he left in a daze. So I decided to learn more about it, and to make some inquiries. The result of this is a little book on organic chemistry that I have been co-authoring for the past four years.To me, the journey began when I was studying it under Alain Aspect, who is an expert in unconventional physics. Since we were both amazed by how our own theories evolved, we eventually found ourselves working together.This led to the opening up of a whole new world of knowledge. We discovered new chemical elements that were then identified using the Sun's spectrum as the light source. It also helped us to understand magnetism.We soon realised that this could be a powerful avenue for furthering our understanding of chemistry and perhaps the natural world. We started writing articles and blogs and trying to attract people to read our work. A friend introduced us to Andy Pettit, an expert in organic chemistry.Together we wrote several articles about UFO science and the potential of organic chemistry in creating the material world. Some of these articles were picked up by other online media, and some of these were picked up by alternative health journals.In 2020 we had the idea to write a book on the subject, as a compelling and attractive topic. We could draw on many of the new technologies used in our field to tell the story of organic chemistry. So we decided to write a collection of our writing on the subject, which we named UF Organic Chemistry.We hope that people will enjoy UF Organic Chemistry and will consider how the science might influence their everyday lives. She attended Drexel University and holds a Bachelors degree in Mathematics and Economics. Check out her review of her undergraduate experience: VT: Describe the campus setting and transportation options.How urban or safe is the campus?Are there buses or do you need a car/bike? Ashley: At Drexel, the campus setting is extremely urban. The dorms and classes are right in the heart of center city Philadelphia. There are buses all over, but most students walk or ride a bike. A car is definitely not a necessity. Despite the urban nature of the campus, Drexel is extremely safe with a large police force, and even walking assistants at night! VT:How available are the professors, academic advisers, and teaching assistants? Ashley: By far, Drexel has one of the best outreach programs between students and professors. Many professors (especially in the Math department which I was a part of) were tutors on campus in addition to their office hours. Drexel purposely has very small upper-level classes without a TA so that the professor-student connection is really strong. VT: How would you describe the dorm life rooms, dining options, location, socialization opportunities with other students? Ashley: Dorm life is really nice. All honors students live together in one brand new skyscraper, which makes it easy to really get to know your classmates. Most of the dorms are suite style meaning four to six people living together with two showers and one bathroom instead of the typical single living area dorm style. I really liked the fact that I had my own bathroom, living room, and kitchen area! All the dorms are on the northern edge of campus, between one to five blocks from class. The honors dorm has food on the first floor, as well as a few other buildings, one which also has a small grocery store. There is one dining hall down by class, but there are also many places to eat in and around campus. As far as socialization goes, there is literally something for everyone. The CAB (Campus Activities Board) allows anyone to start an organization with at least five people. There are plenty of campus-sponsored and local festivals, concerts, and sporting events with lots to do! VT: Which majors/programs are best represented and supported?What did you study and why? Did the university do a good job supporting your particular area of study? Ashley: Business and Physical Therapy, as well as the five-year B.S./M.S programs, are very popular. Drexel also has a very strong focus in Applied Engineering and Mathematics. I studied Mathematics and could not have asked for a better program. Even through the most difficult classes, the professors and academic advisors were always available for support and tutoring. One of the main reasons I attended Drexel was the 25-student limit math class, and the math teaching style. It was truly unlike any other. The co-op program was also an amazing experience, which allowed me to attend school for six months followed by six months of a paid, real world, entry-level position. If you attend college to prepare you for a career, you cannot find a better program. VT: How easy or difficult was it for you to meet people and make friends as a freshman? Does Greek life play a significant role in the campus social life? Ashley: Making friends was not difficult, between the entry-level class that all freshmen have to take and the campus environment. The Freshman Initiation class really allows you to become familiar with your residence, your school, and the Philadelphia/Center City area very quickly. Greek life plays a minor role compared to many of the other programs, with about 25% of students participating in Greek life. VT: How helpful is the Career Centerand other student support services?Do many reputable companies recruit on campus? Ashley: The Career Center at Drexel is unlike any other. The co-op program requires students to work for at least six months full-time with large national companies in their field prior to graduation. To prepare for this opportunity, all students have to take a course prior to working, and after they return, they evaluate the job(s), their personal career path, how to handle yourself in the workplace, resume writing, and much more. Drexel hosts the best co-op program in the country, and therefore hosts more reputable companies than almost any institution in the United States. VT: How are the various study areas such aslibraries, the student union, and dorm lounges? Are they over-crowded, easily available, spacious? Ashley: Most dorm lounges are very nice with flatscreens, quiet rooms, and study areas. The honors dorms even have special additional resources, like tutoring areas and libraries. Although the library can be crowded during midterms or finals, there are many other locations on campus to study. VT: Describe the surrounding town. What kinds of outside establishments / things to do are there that make it fun, boring, or somewhere in between?To what extent do students go to the downtown area of the city versus staying near campus? Ashley: Philadelphia is a vibrant and wonderful town with as much culture as anyone could ever need. It is very similar to the environment of New York City, except less busy and more fun! Campus is very close to center city, and most students travel there via the subway or by walking. Within a few miles, you can visit the famous Rocky Balboa stairs and the art museum, a world class performance hall, the Eagles Stadium, and some of the best ice cream I have ever had on South Street. VT: How big or small is the student body? Were you generally pleased or displeased with the typical class sizes? Ashley: The student body is rather large, but only about one-half to three-fourths of the students are on campus at any given time due to the co-op program. I absolutely loved the class sizes, especially for my major. Math and Finance classes can be extremely difficult, and with a small class size, it really fuels a much better learning environment. I learned more educationally and intra personally in my first semester of college than I had through most of my high school career. VT: Describe one memorable experience with a professor and/or class. Perhaps one you loved the most or one youregretthe most. Ashley:My most memorable experience would definitely be with my pre-career co-op class. Between daily resume and interview practice and pre-job training, I was more prepared than I would have ever imagined for my first round of interviews. I ended up being awarded the Best Interviewer for 2011, and had the opportunity to interview and earn positions with some of the best financial companies in the world. Along with interview skills, we utilized personality and career profiling to help find which career paths would work best. To further direct students, career panelists from all over the world were brought in so that you could gain worldly connections and hear from the real life perspective of someone in your field. From this class, I was able to find what career path truly fit best with my personality and my aspirations. This led to a wonderful co-op with one of the worlds largest financial management companies, and future career options well before graduation. I could never have bee n more prepared to enter the workforce, which is truly the reason you attend college to begin with. Bryce:The University of Washington is in its own enclave of Seattle. It is about three miles from downtown, and while it is still in an urban setting, the entire neighborhood revolves around the campus. The off-campus safety is sometimes questionable, but there is an incredibly low crime rate on campus, even very late at night. I had a bike all four years, and a car during my final two, but the bus system is good enough to get you where you need to be within 20 minutes. VT:How available are the professors, academic advisers, and teaching assistants? Bryce:The University of Washington is a huge school; my largest class was 770 students. That being said, the professors are amazing at being available to students via office hours, email, and private appointments. Almost every class has at least one teaching assistant, and they are even more available than the professors. The key to getting the attention of your professors at the University of Washington is to, 1.) stand out in class (positively, obviously), ask questions, and go to office hours and/or, 2.) choose a strong but small major. For instance, my bioengineering class had 50 students in it, and I knew all of my professors quite well. VT: How would you describe the dorm life rooms, dining options, location, socialization opportunities with other students? Bryce:Dorm life is so fun. There are a ton of dining options, the rooms are big enough for you to survive and have your own space, and Housing Services puts on all kinds of events for those living on campus, as well as off. VT: Which majors/programs are best represented and supported?What did you study and why? Did the university do a good job supporting your particular area of study? Bryce:The sciences are very strong at the University of Washington, especially those that stress research (because they are the ones that bring in national and private funding). I studied bioengineering because it was a beautiful mix of medicine and engineering, and it provided me with a fantastic perspective of medicine before I applied to medical school. VT: How easy or difficult was it for you to meet people and make friends as a freshman? Does Greek life play a significant role in the campus social life? Bryce:I played on the ice hockey team, so I immediately had a group of 25 friends. For those not immediately joining a sports team, I would recommend joining a club or at least engaging in all of the social events put on by the dorms. You should definitely live on campus your freshman year; if you like it, you can stay, and if you do not, you can find off-campus housing or join a fraternity or sorority. Greek life is quite prevalent on/near campus, but if you choose not to join (I chose to avoid Greek life), it is pretty easy to avoid, as well. VT: How helpful is the Career Centerand other student support services?Do many reputable companies recruit on campus? Bryce:I did not use the Career Center much, as I was on a straight track to medical school. My friends and colleagues, however, went to several career fairs and got interviews/jobs as a direct result. The University of Washington is one of the most prestigious universities in the northwest, so all major companies (Boeing, Microsoft, Google, Facebook, etc.) recruit from it. VT: How are the various study areas such aslibraries, the student union, and dorm lounges? Are they over-crowded, easily available, spacious? Bryce:The student union was just renovated, and it is absolutely gorgeous. They have a bowling alley, an arcade, ping-pong tables, a ton of dining options, a small bookstore, a bike repair shop, and more. The libraries are great, but the best and most beautiful ones are closed overnight. There is one 24-hour library, and they are currently renovating it, so it should be great when they finish. The best libraries have cubicles and big workspaces, but they do tend to get swamped during midterms and finals. There are a lot of off-campus study options, as well (e.g. coffee shops). VT: Describe the surrounding town. What kinds of outside establishments / things to do are there that make it fun, boring, or somewhere in between?To what extent do students go to the downtown area of the city versus staying near campus? Bryce:Seattle is great. The music scene is fun, and there is always an event going on somewhere in the city. There are generally on-campus events every weekend. I did have some difficulty finding things to do on the weekends before I turned 21, but that can easily be changed by finding like-minded individuals willing to join you in exploring, going to movies, etc. VT: How big or small is the student body? Were you generally pleased or displeased with the typical class sizes? Bryce:The University of Washington has a huge student body the typical entering class is 5,500 students, and there are more than 40,000 students if you count graduate students. Entry-level classes are generally quite large, ranging from 100-770 students. I really did not like my large classes, but thankfully they were few and far between, and the bulk of my work was in classes that were 30-60 students. VT: Describe one memorable experience with a professor and/or class. Perhaps one you loved the most or one youregretthe most. Bryce: Dr. Scott Freeman taught my entry-level biology class. This man could not only captivate a 400-person audience each day, but he truly cared about each of his students. I was working on campus my first two years, and one day he bought coffee from me about two hours before his class. I introduced myself, and he proceeded to say hi to me and call me by name for the next two years. He somehow recalled the name of every student who introduced him or herself to him, and nothing made him happier than learning that one of his old students achieved a goal. When I told him I got into medical school, he smiled as if I were his own son getting admitted. I hope to teach one day, and I will do my best to care about my students as much as Dr. Freeman. See what she had to say about her undergraduate experience: VT: Describe the campus setting and transportation options.How urban or safe is the campus?Are there buses or do you need a car/bike? Mary: My campus was situated near a small community where most of the students lived, so most people walked, biked, or skated to all of their classes. Pedestrians definitely outnumbered cars. There was a security service available that provided complimentary escort services if you ever felt you needed it, but generally the campus was very safe and there were very few reported incidents of violence. There was also an amazing bus service we could use for free to get all around the city, so there really was no need for a car. VT: How available are the professors, academic advisers, and teaching assistants? Mary: Any time I had questions or needed extra help, I could find it. Theyre there to help you succeed, and generally they love what theyre doing. VT: How would you describe the dorm life rooms, dining options, location, socialization opportunities with other students? Mary: There were several dorms, and all had delicious dining commons. I lived in the only dorm situated off-campus, but we were only a mile away and it was easy to socialize within our dorm and with friends living in other dorms or in the community. We had social events frequently, and living in the dorm was definitely a wonderful experience I would recommend to everyone! VT: Which majors/programs are best represented and supported?What did you study and why? Did the university do a good job supporting your particular area of study? Mary: I studied Marine Biology. Growing up in the mountains far from the ocean made the seas and the life contained within them a mystery to me, and I enjoyed learning everything I could about them. Because I attended a research university, the Sciences were definitely best represented, but there were a lot of Social Sciences as well. My school did a lot of outreach to help us stay informed and make good decisions about our majors, but more often than not you have to get out there and ask questionsthere are always answers, but you have to be proactive. Mary: Greek life was certainly a large part of my university, but I never became involved with the system. I did join several clubs, though, and I met a lot of people my freshmen year, many of whom I am still in contact with. You just have to get out there and find people you can connect with! Mary: I really wish Id spent more time at the Career Center: They had a lot of information available, quizzes, and surveys to help you determine which areas you would be suitable for, as well as Career Counselling. Mary: There was always somewhere with tons of space when you needed it! My school had a 24-hour room in the library that was usually crowded, but there was always room for you to squeeze in next to someone. There were also 24-hour rooms in all of the dorms that you could reserve for yourself or a study group, but there was generally always an open room if you decided to just drop in. The University Center was also a great place to study. VT: Describe the surrounding town. What kinds of outside establishments / things to do are there that make it fun, boring, or somewhere in between?To what extent do students go to the downtown area of the city versus staying near campus? Mary: My college was situated next to a small community within the larger city that housed the university. This community was 90% students and had a vibrant culture; there were restaurants, theatres, etc., and always fun things to do, including programs, lectures, concerts, etc. put on by the university. The larger city was accessible by car/bus and also featured many things to do, such as eating out, shopping, watching plays, concerts, movies, lectures, and hitting the beach. Most students split their time between our small community and the larger city, and both had tons of things to do and were very easily accessible. VT: How big or small is the student body? Were you generally pleased or displeased with the typical class sizes? Mary: The undergraduate student body at my school was roughly 18,000, with approximately 5,000 more graduate students. Because I was studying in the Science department, most of my lower-level classes were quite large (ranging from 150-600 students), which was disconcerting for me since I had attended a very small high school. However, the teachers and TAs were always readily accessible, and my university also offered free study groups that were capped at 15-20 students. Each lecture also had a discussion group of no more than 25 students. Most lower-level classes in other departments were roughly capped at about 300 students. However, when I moved into my upper-division classes, most of my lectures were no more than 150 students, and also had the smaller 15-20 student discussion sections. Overall, I felt a bit overwhelmed at first, but the resources I needed to succeed were readily available. VT: Describe one memorable experience with a professor and/or class. Perhaps one you loved the most or one youregretthe most. Mary: I had never received a grade lower than an A, so I had high expectations for myself when I entered college. I struggled a lot because I was not mentally or academically prepared for the rigor of my classes, and at one point I was taking 18 units of math, chemistry, and physics and had to decide which of my classes to slack off in. As a result, I failed Organic Chemistry in order to succeed in the other classes I was better prepared for. It was a humbling and embarrassing experience, but one I learned from: Do not take on too much, and remember that this is your first try at collegeno one expects you to get it all right on the first try.
